"On his way to stardom: Norwood wins Atlanta's Next Legend competition"

What makes a man a legend? Atlanta-based singer Norwood, with many ties to Gwinnett, is finding out the fun way.

The artist, now in his mid-20s, is the newest Atlanta’s Next Legend. The title was bestowed on him just in time for the Fourth of July event at Atlanta’s Lenox Square last week.

“It was an incredible honor to represent the ATL as Atlanta’s Next Legend,” said Norwood, a Lawrenceville native. “The Legendary Fourth at Lenox Square is an event I always wanted to perform at for several years now, and I was so excited to have the opportunity.”

The selection process for the honor was long and filled with competition from other artists.

“Atlanta’s Next Legend was Lenox Square’s second annual search for a rising star via video submissions,” Norwood’s Manager Jayne Madigan said. “The videos were reviewed by a panel of five judges. We were told that there were hundreds of submissions. However, Norwood won unanimously!”

As the winner, Norwood received the opportunity to perform at the 55th annual Legendary Fourth at Lenox Square event and also received a $500 Simon gift card.

“We estimated the crowd to be at 6,000 people,” Madigan said. “Norwood and his four band members kicked off the celebration with a 20 minute, high energy set at 6 p.m.”

Other acts on the stage that evening were “Departure,” a Journey tribute band, and “Party on the Moon,” a 15-piece cover band.

As Atlanta’s Next Legend, Norwood was definitely the star of the show. He performed three covers — “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars, “Happy” by Pharrell Williams and a Katy Perry/Rihanna mash up. He then sang two original songs titled “Gravity” and “Speechless” and ended with a salute to our country and its heroes with “America the Beautiful.”

The event on the Fourth of July was just one of many happenings involving Norwood as he makes his trajectory toward stardom. The national video release of his song “Gravity” will occur in October, and it has some mysterious rumors floating around about its production.

“Norwood has spent the last year preparing and training for something very exciting and unexpected that he will be doing in the video,” Madigan said. “We can’t give it away at this time, but we can say that he is the only pop artist that has done this on a video. It’ll definitely leave the crowd feeling ‘high.’

“We are seeking sponsors and setting up a crowd funding campaign for this video,” Madigan added.

All sponsors and contributors will receive prizes and perks. Crowd funding through Indiegogo is being kicked off this week with the goal of raising $3,000. To contribute, visit www.norwood-music.com.

Norwood has also been asked to perform for the second time at the Alive! Pre-Emmy Party in Los Angeles. He has been creating YouTube videos and is in a television commercial for the Atlanta Humane Society.
