"Mic Check in the Morning"

She boasts a new wave mix of southern soul with a classic New York flow.
Twenty-one-year-old Olivia Davis, also known as OvercomHER, took the Daybreak stage Friday for “Mic Check in the Morning.”

Davis moved to Anchorage from Dallas, Texas when she was 16-years-old.

“It’s grown on me and I love it here. I love everything about Alaska,” she said.

Davis told James and Megan that she wants her music to inspire her generation.

“One of the first things I realized when I came up here, Alaska is number one in the nation, double times the national average for suicide rate,” she explained. “You know, we are the next generation of innovators, creators and world leaders, world changers. How are we going to do that if we’re not here? I want to stand tall and as someone who at one point struggled with depression, I want to be that light and that voice for other young people coming in saying, ‘Hey, you can beat this and this is what it looks like.”

Davis will be flying to California Saturday to record her second album. Her first, titled “Memoirs of my Future,” was released in 2013. - KTVA channel four news

"Get to know OvercomHER: Alaska's Hottest Star"

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What city and state are you from?

OVERCOMHER: Born and raised in Dallas, TX, always representing the 214, but currently based in Anchorage, Alaska!

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What is your music background?

OVERCOMHER: Music has always been a love, I’d even venture to say deeper than a passion, for me. Since as far back as I could remember, I would have a Tupac song down to a science before I could spell half of what I was even saying! It drove my parents insane, being that their generation grew up on what my folks called “real music for real people”. So, naturally I was in love with this “real music” the first time I heard this insanely creative brother by the name of Roger Troutman. I mean this man was everything I wanted to be musically, so I dug deeper into the era and found artists like Teddy Pendergrass, Gladys Knight, Berry White, The Bee Gees, Hall and Oates, Geto Boys, LL Cool J, Run DMC, Pete Rock, Surface, Queen Latifah etc. etc. from this point in my life on, I knew that I wanted to be involved in music. I loved the stories and the testimonies of all the incredible effects music has on people. Not to mention how it made me feel. So, I took up the saxophone and just about any extra writing courses I could (I wanted to write hits ) through grade school. It wasn’t until later on in life around the age of 18 that I dove into the lyrical side of music. By this time, I’d had the awesome time to grow up in one of the greatest era of music ever, the 90s. The rest is of course history!

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Why do you want to record and release your own music?

OVERCOMHER: I feel music today as of late lacks something that the music industry once had, throughout every genre, which made it great; true substance and body. I never limited myself to one specific genre so I was able to grow on some of the greatest times of music and I want to be one of the “newbies” that continues to carry that torch. I want to make music that makes you smile, cry, laugh, love, forgive and forget, reminisce, keep your faith, music you can feel!

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your songs about?

OVERCOMHER: My songs are about everyday situations and things we as people go through. Weather that’s a feel good, happy, sad, serious, or struggle just depends on what I feel in my heart when my pen hits the pad.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Who are your musical influences?

OVERCOMHER: Oh man, way too many to list but my tops would definitely be Queen Latifah, Kendrick Lamar, Brandy, R-Kelly, Daft Punk, Lido, Elle Varner, Kool and The Gang, Maxi Priest, Andre 3000,Hall and Oates and Erykah Badu!

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How would you describe your music to people?

OVERCOMHER: Feel good 90s with a twist. As a rapper/song-writer, I bring some many different elements, both lyrically and musically, of the 90s into my songs.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What makes you stand out from other artists?

OVERCOMHER: I believe what makes me different from other artists is my flow and the way I approach the songs that I write and perform for myself. I embody many different styles into my own crazy unique take.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in your music career and how did you overcome?

OVERCOMHER: I think the biggest challenge I ever faced in my career was finding myself and being comfortable with that. Early on, I always felt I had a gift and talent to do this but I just didn’t really know how to embrace it so it took years of stumbling around in the dark, literally and figuratively, before I got to a place where I realized this was my dream, my life, I’m incredible at this and I need to stop being afraid and GO! Two years later, I hit the ground running and never looked back!

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?

OVERCOMHER: Currently I’m working on my second studio album titled “S.O.U.N.D.(So Over Useless Noise Dealers)”, which is set to release later this year and planning my first national tour! As well as co-writing for several up and coming artists, one of which is from another country!

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

OVERCOMHER: My overall goal is to sign with a major label, and in collaboration with my own label, within the next 10 years, be one of the top major-Indie labels of the century. Also, a wide spread of awards for my own records as well as works for others.

IAA INDUSTRY NEWS: How can your fans access your music and contact you?

OVERCOMHER: My music will be up for download on iTunes later this year. You can reach me on Twitter, Facebook, Reverbnation, Instagram, Bandcamp, and even my website, all have free downloads too that you can enjoy! Thank you so much for your support and a huge shout out to IAA for taking the time to get to know me and my music! - Industry All Access

She boasts a new wave mix of southern soul with a classic New York flow.Twenty-two-year-old award winning Olivia Davis, also known as OvercomHER was born and raised in Dallas,Texas Her roots are obviously in Hip Hop and Rap, but there is a faith centered undertone to her music. By taking daily life as subject matter, OvercomHER makes work that deals with the documentation of life events and the question of how they can be presented and handled. Her works demonstrate how life extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of these choices. Her music and flavor is characterized and compared to the greats of Queen Latifah, Eve, and even Missy Elliott.
