"“Time to kick your ass in gear”"

“Time to kick your ass in gear,” San Francisco singer, songwriter and activist Pete Kronowitt urges on “Do Something Now.”
American Songwriter, Lee Zimmerman, November 2020 - American Songwriter, Lee Zimmerman

""wondering where all the great protest singers are... Kronowitt is in that wheelhouse.”"

“If you’ve been wondering where all the great protest singers are now that Pete Seeger and Utah Phillips have joined Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs in the Great Beyond, the answer is that they’re out there; you’re just no looking in the right places. Take New Jersey-born, Florida-raised, and San Francisco based Pete Kronowitt, for example.”
“Utah Phillips” was fond of saying “…that the best call-to-action songs are short on poetry and long on getting to the heart of things. Kronowitt is in that wheelhouse.”

"Rootstime BE (Translated) Review 8/2/16 - Pete Kronowitt “A Lone Voice” CD"

Another songwriter from the States making us wonder how in the world he managed to stay under our radar for so long. We can’t but wonder about that now that we've been listening over and over again to his new CD, his fourth already. Done can not be undone, so we better concentrate on presenting this young man to you, as far as our sources stretch, that is. Pete Kronowitt is a socially and politically inspired singer songwriter from the region of San Francisco. He has been active in the music business for quite a long time. His debut album, "Phases of the Heart" dates from 1993 and was followed by "Threads" in 2002 and "Elements" in 2005. Now, a decade later, after performances in China, Japan, Vietnam and other countries.- there’s that fourth CD and I must admit that learning to know this man(’s music) is a particularly fine experience.

There are a number of reasons for this. To start with, there is the fact that Pete comments on society, and there’s a lot to reflect about on present day America, as we all know. As I always had a craving for Pete Seeger and later on John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle, I most likely will develop one for Pete Kronowitt. Call him a "social chronicler,", call him a protest singer, call him a political commentator ... he’s all of that. The album title probably says enough in that respect. Its title seems to refer to an album by Sam Cooke, but the title song is completely different from Sam’s. That goes for all twelve songs on the album. Another example is "Got Guns". The title leaves no room for doubt: Pete deals in a refined way with all kinds of tendencies towards extremism and is an advocate of the message: "Improve the world, start with yourself."

In addition, Pete also writes songs about deeply personal matters. He has that in common with the artists mentioned above. He is not reluctant to write a song for his wife, on the occasion of their twentieth anniversary together ( "Holding Your Hand" ) and he doesn’t shun a tricky subject like suicide (the closing "Perfect Day" is about his own sister ...). Pete wrote he most beautiful song on the album, "Tears On The Back Of Her Head", together with producer and multi-instrumentalist Phil Madeira. It is dedicated to two friends Pete lost to cancer. The great David Mansfield, known from Dylan's "Rolling Thunder Review" and the unjustly forgotten Alpha Band (see T-Bone Burnett and Steven Soles) is present with different kinds of strings. Bass player Chris Donohue played on records of dozens of big names including Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Tom Jones ... just to name a few. Drummer Dennis Holt is also a man of experience, given his contributions to literally countless plates of people like KT Oslin, Brooks Williams and Greg Trooper. The projects that Phil Madeira worked on are far too numerous to list up in such short notice. These collaborations include work with The Neville Brothers, Keb 'Mo, Mavis Staples, Solomon Burke, Buddy and Judy Miller, Garth Brooks and so many more....

So this is the third item in my plea: Pete’s band on this record is absolutely "major league" and includes people who can afford to turn down any offer they don’t like. If they participated it must mean that they have beliefs in the strength of Pete’s material. In summary: we have here a man in the prime of his life, who knows what this world is about. He has the ability to cast these in razor sharp and accurate lyrics. He has a sense of melody reminding us of Mellencamp, Springsteen and Earle. Together with this circle of top musicians he produced a beautiful new album. I’m certain that there are very few excuses for not seeing that the Big Break of Pete Kronowitt is imminent. This is in fact a Very big breakthrough, no doubt about that.!

Anti Music Review 8/2/16

Pete Kronowitt
A Lone Voice
Mean Bean
Kronowitt is an established Americana artist, a singer, songwriter and guitarist with a penchant for making political statements without conveying anger or preachiness; in fact he generally gets his point across in a fun way. Not that there's anything fun about the situation with all the shootings going on in the US right now, but Kronowitt's protest song "Got Guns?" is jangly and an easy sing-along with biting lyrics like "Don't tell me you're too young/If you've got a hand, get a gun." With a song title that plays on the "Got milk?" slogan, Kronowitt makes the statement that gun violence has become all too ubiquitous even before he starts singing. The John Mellencamp-like "Necessary Evils" is another cut filled with political commentary although it paints with a wider brushstroke, and "The Beast" laments current events with a Jimmy Buffett tone. Not everything here is about the state of the world; the tender "You Are Here" is a hopeful cut that reminds that it is possible (and a good idea) to look around and see the beauty of living in the moment. Some listeners will hear the call to action here but all can certainly enjoy Kronowitt's fine voice just as pure entertainment.

Pete Kronowitt
A Lone Voice
Review by G. W. Hill

This an effective set. The music lands in the singer/songwriter, folk meets country and rock range of sounds. There is nothing exceptionally unique here, but there are some great moments. It is definitely a solid release.

Track by Track Review

Change Is Gonna Come
Based in roots music, this is a cool folk rocker. It makes me think of Bob Dylan in a lot of ways.

Got Guns?
More rock and roll based, this is a singer/songwriter styled tune that’s classy. It’s also classic in texture. This anti-NRA cut is topical right now for sure. It has some country twinge to it. And, yes, I know it’s pro-Gun, but it’s obviously Poe.

Tears on the Back of Her Head
A mellower, slow piece, the organ lends a real retro texture. This is part country music, part gospel and all cool. It’s one of my favorite tunes here, really.

You Are Here
The mellow balladic cut is very much a folk meets country kind of thing. It’s slow and pretty.
Necessary Evils
More of a rocker, there is a lot of country music in the mix here. I dig the violin (I should probably say “fiddle”).

Puppet Master
Here’s another energized country tinged rocker. It’s cool stuff.

Holding Your Hand
A mellower cut, this includes a nice duet. It’s a country and folk based balladic cut. The sounds are quite timeless. The organ lends a lot.

Body, Choice & Mind
I love the piano and the guitar soloing on this thing. It’s a real southern fried rocker. It’s a great tune, too.

Follow the Leader
Another ballad, this isn’t anything Earth shattering, but it’s solid and effective.

The Beast
Here we get a folk rocker with some country in the mix. It’s bouncy, energetic and fun.

She Gives
A bit more of a rocker, I like the violin on this tune. The tune is part folk rock, part country rock and all based in a singer/songwriter vein.

Perfect Day
This starts with the mellowest section of the whole album. The cut gets a bit more involved, but only a little, as it continues. It remains just vocals and an acoustic guitar, though. While it’s an intriguing piece, I think it might have worked better in a different position. It just doesn’t seem to have the necessary charm for a closer.

Keys and Chords Review (Translated) 7/17/16

The San Francisco, California coming singer / songwriter Pete Kronowitt with the recorded in Nashville "A Lone Voice 'on his fourth album.Although the title might give the impression that you might just be a guided vote by an acoustic guitar hear, this is not the case. Pete let them guide you through the classic bass / drums / guitar combination and supplements it with Hammond, accordion, mandolin and violin.Kronowitt casting stories, which often contained a message in folk melodies, which he sometimes gives a slight rocking character, as in "Got Guns'. Hammond and violin in turn, provide the peace 'Tears On The Back Of Her Head' needs. The accordion and violin dressy rocker 'Necesssary Evils "Pete is near Petty and' Puppetmaster 'rocking quite a distance away. Vocals Pete gets into the blood beautiful love song "Holding Your Hand 'help Halley Elwell, while Phil Madeira's piano playing' Body, Mind & Choice 'radiates swinging character. Closer 'Perfect Day' has nothing in common with the eponymous song by Lou Reed or right? Even Pete's song moves through its simplicity.

"A Lone Voice" is somewhere between folk and folk rock. Kronowitt is a solid songwriter with a good ear for catchy melodies. Lambert Smits (4)

Standing Together for Justice Concert at the Agora Stands Up to Bigotry and Hate

Mon 7/18 @ 8PM

The Tue 7/19 concert at the Agora by the aggressively political rock act Prophets of Rage, featuring three members of Rage Against the Machine, is sold out. But if you’d like to hear some musicians rage in a lower key, the Agora will also be the venue for the Monday night Standing Together for Justice concert and benefit.

Local and national musicians will be coming together in a concert sponsored by the Singing for Justice MeetUp Group and Stand Together Against Trump — making clear what the slant is clear! — for an evening of what they describe as “peaceful protest songs demanding change while rejecting fear, racism, sexism and xenophobia.”

Performers include Chicago-based Allison Beyer, John David Coppola, Cleveland’s Matt Harmon (pictured), Swap Meet, Brendan O’Malley with Honeybucket, and San Francisco’s Pete Kronowitt celebrating the release of his album A Lone Voice. Tickets are $20; proceeds benefit two Cleveland charities: St. Paul’s Church’s outreach services and the Mount Pleasant-based service provider Thea Bowman Center.

PETE KRONOWITT - A LONE VOICE

Another songwriter from the States, which we must ask after careful listening of this new-and in his case he fourth- CD why the hell all this time managed to stay under our radar. Now, done can not be undone, so we should use the opportunity to ask this young man to you, as far as we get at least the necessary data ... .Pete is a social and political singer songwriter moved away from San Francisco, who has been quite a long time in the music business is active / His debut album, "Phases of the Heart" dates back to 1993 and was followed by "Threads" in 2002 and "Elements" from 2005. Now, a decade later -decennium to him, among other things China, Japan and Vietnam bracht- is therefore the new fourth and I must say that know the man is particularly fine.

That has to do a number of things: first, there is the fact that Pete comments on society, as we all know, there is the America of the last time something to say. As I had a bean Pete Seeger and still voted for John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle, I will develop one, I suppose so, for Pete Kronowitt. Call him a "social chronicler," call him a protest singer, call him a political commentator ... he has it all. The album title says enough in that respect, I think so. Borrowing played by Sam Cooke, as regards the title, but also a complete own song, like all twelve songs on this album. Another example: "Got Guns" has also been a significant title and Pete counting on fine way with all kinds of extremism-prone tendencies and supporter of the message: "Improve the world, start with yourself."

In addition, Pete also writes songs about very personal matters and also that he has in common with the names, which I quoted above: he is not afraid to write a song for his wife, on the occasion of their twenty years together ( "Holding Your Hand" ) or he will be a tricky business as suicide out of the way (the closing "Perfect Day" is about his own sister ...). The most beautiful song of the album, "Tears on the back of her head," Pete wrote along with producer and multi-instrumentalist Phil Madeira, is dedicated to two friends Pete lost to cancer. The great David Mansfield, known Dylan's "Rolling Thunder Review" and the unjustly forgotten "Alpha Band" (see T-Bone Burnett and Steven Soles) is the party with all kinds of strings, bassist Chris Donohue played on records of dozens of large names including Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Tom Jones ... to only those noemen.drummer Dennis Holt is already not a small one, given his contributions to literally countless plates of people like KT Oslin, Brooks Williams Greg Trooper and the reference Phil Madeira, which is really too big to begin with. I pick out a few things: The Neville Brothers, Keb 'Mo, Mavis Staples, Solomon Burke, Buddy and Judy Miller, Garth Brooks ....

Which I only point would make three of my of arguments: the band, Pete on this record guides is "major league" and includes only people who can afford somewhere not to come into play. They did it anyway at these numbers shows that they believe in the strength of the material that Pete contributor. So we have, in summary: a man standing in the middle of life and in the world and an opportunity to write a strongly worded texts. He has a sense of melody and reminds us Mellencamp, Springsteen and Earle, he gathered a club musicians around him and he has a beautiful new album. I think there are few arguments for not facing the Big Breakthrough Pete Kronowitt. This is in fact a very big breakthrough, for sure!

Review JP's Music Blog 7/7/16
http://jpsmusicblog.blogspot.com/2016/07/cd-review-new-music-from.html

America is ready for something to change. Whether it happens with the arrival of a new president or with new technology, the people of this country are ready to embrace change and according to singer/songwriter Pete Kronowitt, a "Change Is Gonna Come."

His latest album "A Lone Voice" features a dozen tracks that look to send out a political message on everything from gun control ("Got Guns?") to the heads of government ("Puppet Master") to equal rights for women ("Body, Choice & Mind"). His songwriting excels during the infectious ballad "You Are Here" and "Follow The Leader." The up-tempo acoustic rock of "She Gives" and the quietness of "Perfect Day" ends the album with an inspiring message of hope for change in the future.

Title - ‘A Lone Voice’
Artist - Pete Kronowitt

To say that singer/songwriter Pete Kronowitt speaks for a Nation via his lyrics might seem a tad bit of overkill, but trust me, when you hear those words, bathe in his viewpoints, even before halfway through this highly addictive new album, you will be feeling beyond ready to affect changes in this country!

From the opening song, the crisp and clear ‘Change Is Gonna Come,’ Kronowitt’s emotive songs, fusing acoustic pop and indie-folk, while evoking an era when music was made to battle injustice, stand tall, stand proud. Each song contains a powerful message we all should pay heed to, much like the opener, where with the advancement of cell phones and selfies, there truly is nowhere to hide these days.

1. “Change Is Gonna Come”
2. “Got Guns?”
3. “Tears on The Back of Her Head”
4. “You Are Here“
5. “Necessary Evils”
6. “Puppet Master “
7. “Holding Your Hand “
8. “Body, Choice & Mind “
9. “Follow The Leader “
10. “The Beast “
11. “She Gives “
12. “Perfect Day”

Here on San Francisco-based Kronowitt‘s fourth full-length album, A Lone Voice, he masterfully explores themes ranging from socio-political struggles to musings on the human condition. With a sound reminiscent of Steve Earle and John Mellencamp, all wrapped within the beliefs held by a young Bob Dylan, each track oozes alt-Americana, folk, pop, country, and even a slight acoustic-punk set of influences, in a way that virtually compelsyou to listen along.

A Lone Voice was recorded and produced in Nashville, Tennessee by Grammy-winning songwriter Phil Madeira, with backing musicians David Mansfield on guitars, mandolin and violin, Dennis Holt on drums and percussion, Chris Donohue on bass, and of course, Phil Madeira on guitars and keys.

MEAN BEAN

PETE KRONOWITT/A Lone Voice: Long before Bruce Springsteen discovered Pete Seeger, it seemed like he might be the new voice of the populist. Didn’t happen, but Kronowitt seems to have picked up the ball and run with it. A protest, folk/rock singer in the classic 60s mode, his songs are a wake up call to an apathetic world that doesn’t realize how the sand is shifting under it’s feet. Without a strident lick in any of the lyrics, this diverse collection is one of the few that can send a message without hitting you over the head with it---and keeps rocking throughout. Certainly out of the ordinary for these times, it’s loaded with truths that need to be heard. Check it out.

Review for Pete Kronowitt's "A Lone vVoice"
So this album is pretty different. It reminds me of folk rock from the 60's because it is very issue based. I don't know if this guy is a democrat or republican or what, but he definitely has a lot to say about what’s going on in America today. Musically it sounds great. The vocals and instruments are on point. Pete Kronowitt is a folk artist that speaks his mind and that I have to give him props for. Whether you agree with him or not, you'll just have to take a listen yourself here https://petekronowitt.bandcamp.com. Pete's got some moxie!

"Keys and Chords Review (Translated) 7/17/16 - Pete Kronowitt “A Lone Voice” CD"

"A Lone Voice" is somewhere between folk and folk rock. Kronowitt is a solid songwriter with a good ear for catchy melodies." Lambert Smits

The San Francisco, California coming singer / songwriter Pete Kronowitt with the recorded in Nashville "A Lone Voice 'on his fourth album.Although the title might give the impression that you might just be a guided vote by an acoustic guitar hear, this is not the case. Pete let them guide you through the classic bass / drums / guitar combination and supplements it with Hammond, accordion, mandolin and violin. Kronowitt casting stories, which often contained a message in folk melodies, which he sometimes gives a slight rocking character, as in "Got Guns'.

"Music Street Journal Review 7/23/16 - Pete Kronowitt “A Lone Voice” CD"

- Music Street Journal

JAMES TAYLOR II! Think back to a time, and place, 1968 at the APPLE RECORDS office in
Swinging London. In steps a young man who, with one song, “Now It's We”, floors the APPLE staff
with his voice and delivery. "Sign him to a contract!" an APPLE staffer yells. Fast forward to 2006.
PETE KRONOWITT is that young man.

""...distinctive""

[Kronowitt’s] songs work without needing to be pushed and the arrangements do enough to give each
tune a distinctive profile. It’s all rather pleasant.
- Sam Saunders, whisperinandhollerin.com

""...good and well written""

“[Pete’s] music is good and well written—just as tender and emotional as you’d expect contemporary
wedding pop-rock songs to be. - J-Sin, smother.net

""...higher calibre""

[Kronowitt} is of a higher calibre than the last few singer-songwriters that have passed through this
laptop’s CD drive. His website is also pretty interesting – a free flowing waterfall of a website. - Simon Hawkins, New-Noise.net

"Pete Kronowitt Bio in AMG"

Singer/songwriter Pete Kronowitt crafts honest, thoughtful, and accessible folk-based pop songs in the vein of Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and Peter Case. Kronowitt honed his skills in the “stairwells and quads” of American University in Washington before releasing his 1995 debut, Phases of the Heart. Threads arrived in 2003, followed in 2005 by Elements, the latter of which raised money for the Diabetes Research Institute and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In 2009, Kronowitt embarked on a short tour of Asia that included stops in Japan, China, and Vietnam.

""...quiet power""

The instrumentation is minimal, making each track sound intimate and giving vast importance to each
passing measure. A great technique Kronowitt uses wonderfully giving his acoustic ballads a quiet power.

San Francisco Political Singer/Songwriter Pete Kronowitt Releases New Full-Length Album

A Lone Voice Delivers Timely and Salient Political Message

For Immediate Release – San Francisco, CA – The hunger Americans feel for change is palpable, and no artist voices this urgency better than San Francisco-based Pete Kronowitt, a seasoned singer/songwriter who is releasing his fourth full-length album, A Lone Voice. Pete’s emotive songs fuse acoustic pop and indie-folk, while evoking an era when music was made to battle injustice. A Lone Voice, releasing worldwide on July 15, 2016, masterfully explores themes ranging from socio-political struggles to musings on the human condition. His sound is a Steve Earle-Elvis Costello hybrid, a heap of alt-Americana influences.

The album was recorded and produced in Nashville, Tennessee by Grammy-winning songwriter Phil Madeira, with backing musicians David Mansfield on guitars, mandolin and violin, Dennis Holt on drums and percussion, Chris Donohue on bass, and of course, Phil Madeira on guitars and keys. A Lone Voice features a set of lyrical new songs spanning folk, pop, country, and acoustic-punk influences from the Ramones to Pete Seeger and John Mellencamp.

A Lone Voice stays upbeat, despite presenting some uncomfortable truths and lifting the curtain to reveal political and media manipulation.  Audiences will join the chorus of the title track “Change Is Gonna Come” (inspired from Sam Cooke's iconic song) and tap to the beat of the album’s protest anthem “Got Guns?” Through his music, Kronowitt pokes fun at the absurdity of extremism and reminds us, the power of change is always here and now – within ourselves.

There are also intimate, personal moments in this collection, drawing connections between the national zeitgeist and the all-too-human emotional toll it takes on those we love. The smooth and Clapton-esque “You Are Here” reminds listeners (and Pete himself) to be present. “Holding Your Hand” is a gift for his wife after 20 years together, and the tender, album-closing “Perfect Day” is a moving tribute to his sister, who took her own life. “Tears on the Back of Her Head,” co-written with producer Phil Madeira, was written for two friends lost to cancer and their spouses, and may be the most stirring track on A Lone Voice.

With an unwavering belief that together, we can raise our voices to demand common sense solutions, Pete reminds us, “The people of these great United States are bound by the many things we have in common, and we must reject any manufactured issues which are cynically created simply to divide us.” With his revolutionary new album, A Lone Voice, Pete Kronowitt has called for a rediscovery of the protest song…and not a moment too soon.
