Bio

Formed in June 2000 by Craig Pady to achieve the Funky-Jazz sound with
Denis Keldie on Hammond B3 Organ – Bill Murray on guitar, Paul DeLongand/or Charlie Cooley on Drums, and Craig Pady on Tenor Saxophone.
They immediately went on a 35 date tour sponsored by Carlsberg Beer, playing at The Royal York Hotel, Rosewater Supper Club and many other hot venues, including the
Sky Dome Hotel for the Blue Jays Home Opener in Toronto.

After taking refuge into the studio, The Soul Jazz Express released their self-titled Debut album in  2005.
Denis Keldie – Hammond B3 Organ – Denis has been active in many of types of music over the years, from R & B, Jazz, Pop, Country and everything else in between, both in Toronto and abroad.
As co-founder of A&M recording act “The Extras”, with partner Leon Stevenson, he co-wrote and recorded four critically acclaimed pop albums from 1980 to 1985 and toured extensively during that time.
As a studio musician, playing Hammond organ, piano, all keyboards, accordion, mandolin, guitar and bass, he has over 150 cds and albums to his credit, with artists like Natalie McMaster, Jeff Healey, Prairie Oyster, Rita Coolidge with Ry Cooder, The Boomers, Jesse Cook, Alfie Zappacosta, Lost & Profound, The Linclons, The Extras, King Biscuit Boy, The Stampeders, Etta James, and has performed on television and live appearances with the Rankins, Colin James, Jann Arden, Amy Sky, Marc Jordan , Ashley McIsaac, and many others.

Bill Murray – Guitar –Bill has been playing guitar professionally for over 35 years. Having played with the Lincolns, and various other bands- as well as being acclaimed as one of Toronto’s top teachers, he is now with The Denis Keldie Trio and the Soul Jazz Express.

Craig Pady – Tenor Saxophone –
Having played in a variety of bands from African –The Tikisa Band – to Rock – V12 - to funk – the Funky Monks to jazz – the Soul Jazz Express – he has developed his style from listening to jazz his whole life (literally), and has taken his jazz knowledge to the radio-waves as DJPAYDZ/DJ Goldfinger on the ‘What is Hip?’ Radio show, Tuesday Nights from 8 to 10pm on CIUT 89.5 FM for the past 21 years.

Charlie Cooley’s musical take on drumming has kept this youthful Canadian drummer busy playing with some of the biggest and best names in the business. Sure, he’s capable of blowing chops and knocking off odd-times with ease. But in the real world it’s musicianship and taste that get the gigs. With a long list of credits including chart-topper Amanda Marshall, latin-fusioneers Manteca, Canadian country kings Prairie Oyster, British blues pioneer Long John Baldry, and solo star Jimmy Rankin, Charlie has proven time and again that making music on the drums is what matters most. One minute funky like Little Feat, the next soulful like James Brown. Or maybe it’s a matter of playing a straight-up pop groove; Charlie does it all. And he does it really well. You’ve probably heard Charlie Cooley. If you haven’t, maybe you should. Because when it comes to tasty drumming with feel and the ability to rock out with excitement, Charlie rules.
