"Praise for The Appleseed Collective"

"“Whoa” is all I had to say after this group of fine musicians finished each of their tracks for our Harvest Session with The Appleseed Collective...Exploring a genre (or mix of genres rather) not often explored in Michigan, this group has a unique sound and places to go." - Mostly Midwest

"Praise for The Appleseed Collective"

"Tearing it up is not something that immediately comes to mind when referring to acoustic Americana-based music (the Appleseed Collective actually describes its music as "Americana folk jazz"), but moments later the band took the stage and proceeded, in fact, to tear it up...The Appleseed Collective is young, talented, full of energy, and playing a type of music that is hardly in abundance in southeast Michigan." - ArborWeb

"Praise for "Baby to Beast""

"...dashed with Dixie ragtime, bluegrass, gypsy folk, and swing blues...enough to blow away the most creative kitchen cook" - Americana UK

"Praise for "Baby to Beast""

"But there’s something edgier to Beast, something further outfield, that gives it its distinctive glow – it could be how earnestly it embraces the beauty of the folk song tradition and meticulously stirs in foggier, headier sonic concoctions of a more psychedelic flare, it could be their trips into spookier realms of goosebump-pricking tall tale sways, or it could be just how damned harmonious the whole affair winds up being – like these voices, chimes, strums and percussive scrapes belong together – grown together into a five headed beast…" - iSpy Magazine

"Praise for The Appleseed Collective"

"Creating a timeless sound with their unique mesh of Americana, folk, and gypsy jazz, The Appleseed Collective produces music that wouldn’t sound out of place in an era that none of the band member’s are even close to old enough to remember." - Awe Chasm

"Praise for The Appleseed Collective"

"Not exactly the kind of stuff you're hearing on the radio, which is only half of what makes us think they're pretty darn cool. But the fact that along with a mandolin, violin and banjo, they also include a washboard in their incredibly dynamic, filled-out sound...well, it doesn't get much better than that." - Real Detroit Weekly

"Praise for "The Inability to Feel" (Single)"

"But then you hear bands like Ann Arbor traditionalists The Appleseed Collective and any notion of fixed aesthetics and vague assumptions are thrown out the window in favor of the development of an organic musical progression and the sense that this music has always been there, patiently biding its time — hovering in the air, waiting for just the right person to come along and pluck it like some tonal fruit. ..This is music best served alongside a roaring campfire but also has the ability to challenge the rafters of any grand arena." - Beats Per Minute

Bio

Mix the Hot Club of Paris with the sweaty soul of Dixieland, a couple blades of bluegrass, a pinch of ragtime beat, and a western swinging swagger and you've just conjured the sound of The Appleseed Collective. Over the past few years, the band has put the pedal to the metal touring the country in support of their 2012 release, Baby to Beast.

A showcase of the eclectic mix of writing styles, Beast feels youthful--voices calling out to you, the group blossoming around each piece. "The blends of swing, bluegrass, Dixieland ditties and alluring gypsy-folk whirls - is something close to a transcendent listen ... you're there, on some dirt road, being led on by these songs," raves Jeff Milo of iSpy Magazine.

Formed in 2010, The Appleseed Collective has become a force of nature driven by their local community and developed by a strong sense of do-it-yourself drive. In an age of corporations and climate change, the bands commitment to buying & selling local, eating from gardens, and being their own bosses has led to the kind of success that feels simply organic.

Everybody brings something fresh to the table. Upon returning from a trip to New Orleans, guitarist Andrew Brown had a song in his heart that just wouldnt quit--when a chance meeting introduced him to Brandon Smith, violinist and improvisation enthusiast, Andrew knew hed found the Stephane Grapelli to his Django Reinhardt. Vince Russo, percussionist and van-packing expert, speaks freely and cleverly with each clack of the washboard or ding of the short-order cooks bell. Katie Lee brings a vocal range that is a force to be reckoned with. Its angelic one moment and powerhouse the next, all complemented by twinkling banjo melodies. And the addition of double bassist Ben Rolston to the mix delivers a level of musicality and jazz sophistication that sends hearts a-flutter.

The Appleseed Collective returned to the studio in May, and is anticipating the release of a new album this winter. Young Love will feature songs written by Brown, Lee, and Smith, as is true to the bands collective nature. The album was tracked almost entirely live, a testament to how the group has developed as a unit. Like a vintage merlot, the songwriting on Young Love has developed stronger, deeper flavors--the feeling of being truly alone is coupled with the understanding that there is no perfect love; the idea that opposites attract is enhanced by the feeling of being so overwhelmingly happy you become sad. Listeners learn that there is no genre boundary that cannot be crossed, that acoustic instruments are not restrictive, but instead capable of speaking every language. Learning to work together is almost as important as learning the feeling of being torn apart as the band pushes and pulls, stretches and compacts into every space created by the diverse song structures. From Andrews Sisters-esque harmonies to rapid bluegrass changes to bossa nova-turned-psychedelia, Young Love is the exploration of old souls stuck in young bodies, each yearning to share some kind of felt experience.

The Appleseed Collective is not a bluegrass band. Its not The Hot Club of Paris. Its not a ragtime cover band. The Appleseed Collective represents Americana music rooted in traditions from all over the world and from every decade, creating a live experience that welcomes every soul and is impossible to replicate.
