CLARKSVILLE, TENN — . John Winters and Samantha Hawkins have only been performing together as The Rooted Wings for a couple of years, but they have quickly become one of the area’s favorite bands. John sums up their playlist as “everything from Elvis to Lady Gaga.”

Winters plays the guitar, he and Hawkins both sing, and the result is a rather unique sound that blends several styles of music.

“We have been writing our own original music for about two years now. It’s a mix of folk, jazz and blues,” Winters said. “If you had to compare our sound to someone, I guess it might be that of The Civil Wars.”

Winters hails from Clarksville and has been playing guitar for 25 years.

He “knew from a young age that he was supposed to play music. ‘I told my brother that I could predict the future, that I could pick out the group of notes that the instrumentalist was going to play,’” Winters said on the band’s web site, Facebook.com/The Rooted Wings.

Winters wasn’t actually psychic, just naturally intuitive about music. He went on to major in music at Austin Peay State University and began his solo acoustic career about 10 years ago. One of his biggest influences at the time was Martin Sexton, an indie performer from Syracuse, New York.

Hawkins is originally from Austin, Texas, a city with a very strong music presence. She “recalls loving classic rock almost from birth — what with dancing to The Grateful Dead and singing along to Stevie Nicks,” said the band’s Facebook page. “Her other influences are Sheryl Crow, Rachael Yagamata, Fiona Apple, Sublime, and the list goes on and on.”

Hawkins and Winters first started crossing paths 10 years ago, but it took many moons for them to hit on the idea of being a duo. Hawkins would sometimes sit in with different bands in which John was a member, or they would see each other around town at open-mic nights.

“We knew each other for years, and then about two years ago we finally came together as The Rooted Wings,” Winters said.

That coming together has been fruitful. On Facebook, Janice Goins praised their “awesome voices” after hearing a live performance, and added “I am definitely a fan!”

According to a band bio, Winters and Hawkins have soulful voices that “lend to each other in a way that will make it impossible to forget.”

Recently the band has been featured at Jammin’ in the Alley and clubs around Clarksville. They have also played a lot of dates in Nashville and spent part of this summer performing in Texas.

To get a taste of what The Rooted Wings has to offer, catch their free show starting 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 at Relish, a Unique Eatery, 149 Kender Rhea Court, off Highway 41-A Bypass.

“We are playing at Relish for the dinner crowd Friday night,” says the band’s web page. “This is a family friendly atmosphere — so come on out for some great food and great music!”

"The Rooted Wings"

The Rooted Wings

Samantha Hawkins- Vocals/Percussion and John Winters- Guitar/Base/Drums/ Vocals
Though out the history of music female vocalist capture some of the most evocative, emotional and passionate music in the industry. The Rooted Wings blessed with a female singer that has one of those voices that transform into the sound of the genre she is working in. Be it a soulful track or a country romp. With some solid blues, country riffs mixed with some rock and soul the Rooted Wings take flight on song after song. This is easygoing music, laid back with a solid groove moving the songs along like an easy flowing stream.
There is a nice feel to the simple guitar work and the vocal accompaniment, simple yet elegant. The two work very well together vocally, her strong and emotional vocals and his warm familiar sound.
The Rooted Wings are not a band you can place a tag on, know you have to hear them to understand. They have a myriad of influences floating through their music. However, none of those influences comes out as anything but the sound of The Rooted Wings. Tracks like Take On The World show the pure pop side of the band. Tracks like Cowboys and Couture, Skin and Blood show the depth of the band as song writers with subject matter that lyrically grabs your imagination as you listen to the story unfold.
There is never any doubt that The Rooted Wings are a band that you should listen to if you are a fan of easy flowing music with a solid groove, Shelby Lynne is a female purveyor of this style. The grooves reach out and pull you in and without any conscious effort, you find yourself humming along, tapping your foot and maybe singing along. Samantha Hawkins has an inviting tone than many of the popular singers simply do not have today. They may be able to hit note’s that says they are technically better singers but they cannot capture the warmth of emotion that connect most people with music.
We all know the radio/TV/label hype is what sells records, not talent. Rap and hip/hop would never be so popular if talent mattered. Many of the artists at the top of the charts would not sell any more records than the average top independent artist releases which is around twenty thousand units, if they did not have the hype behind them. So spread the word to help The Rooted Wings take flight.
Most importantly go buy the cd or the download. Do what you can do to support the artist. - New Classic Music of Tomorrow

Bio

With only a single guitar and two dynamic voices, The Rooted Wings showcases various styles targeted to each unique audience. It is truly rare that a musical act can cover music from mutiple genres so faithfully while maintaining its own individual character. The Rooted Wings' original music reflects the diversity of their cover material. From the New Classic Music for Tomorrow Music Review on The Rooted Wings' self-titled album, "They have a myriad of influences floating through their music. However, none of those influences comes out as anything but the sound of The Rooted Wings.".
The Rooted Wings is Samantha Hawkins and John Winters. Samantha is originally from Austin, Texas, John was born in Nashville, Tennessee. Aside from representing two different cities known for music, their stories are somewhat similar. They both ended up in Clarksville, Tennessee, both studied music performance privately from an early age, both are alumni of Austin Peay State University, and both were performing in the same venues. It was inevitable that they would eventually meet. After a few open mic collaborations, they knew they had something great together. The Rooted Wings was born. Since then, they have been entertaining audiences everywhere they go.
