"[LISTEN] THE SPARE ME'S - NOTHING HAPPENING HERE"

Starts off quite strangely and almost sounds like future krautrock, but then it settles into more familiar proto-punk garage rock. Cool all round. - Ride The Tempo

"THE SPARE ME'S Nothing Happening Here EP"

When I get new music from a guitar-and-drums duo, I usually expect a bombastic assault akin to Japandroids or Death From Above 1979. The pleasant change of pace and volume that Toronto’s The Spare Me‘s offer on their first release, Nothing Happening Here EP, proposes an alluring alternative.”Jukin” is a wickedly melodic slice of guitar shredding “ditch rock”, as is “Disappear You”; the title track serves up distorted, paranoid goodness that winks at some underlying badness that’s happened to these guys. You can’t tell whether they’re running away from it or speeding head-first into the maelstrom, and quite frankly, it doesn’t matter one way or the other.

The Spare Me’s are Peter Fraser (vocals, guitars, keys) and Erik Tokar (backing vocals, drums). When not actively working as The Spare Me’s, Erik is the drummer in QBiM faves Champion Lover, and Peter is “despondent almost to the point of catatonia” (their words not mine). No need to fret Mr. Fraser, for based on the evidence of these first three tracks, The Spare Me’s have a lot to offer. They are already hard at work on their second EP, with plans to start recording after an April 4 show at Toronto’s Silver Dollar Room.

“It may end up being our first full-length at the clip we’re going,” they say of their next recording project, noting they already have enough material ready for an album. Let’s hope they spare no time in getting it out and ready for mass consumption. - Quick Before It Melts

"Toronto Garage-Rock Duo The Spare Me’s Sure Know How To Write Them."

Toronto garage-rock duo The Spare Me’s sure know how to write them. Catchy numbers with clear vocals shine through like crystal and the melodies with the right amount of distortion just so. Sounds epic as they blare through the speakers and I can only imagine the joyful boundless noise that would be unleashed from these guys live at a show. Have a listen to Nothing Happening Here pulled from their EP by the same name available to stream and download in it’s entirely on Bandcamp! Spare them some time for their tunes and became enamored as I have! - Diamond Deposits

"Bands of the Day 31st January 2015."

The Spare Me’s are a fantastic rock n’ roll sound/band that hail out of Toronto, Canada. This superb duo structure and play out brilliantly deep/haunting rock songs that have the raw garage/post-punk era glories in ‘now’ present music times. They bring sensationally crisp/edgy guitar riff skies alongside a rhythm unit that has a real ‘boom’ vibe throughout with vocal airs that are deliciously ghostly and vibrant in depth. I was extremely captivated by their entire rock sound definition and really expect that good rock n’ roll music appreciators around the globe will take this band’s say into their own ear music catalogs, ‘top’ listen here!

The Spare Me’s will be very admirable listening to fans of: The Jesus & Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Pixies.

"Review - The Spare Me's"

The Spare Me’s are a rock duo from Toronto. Made up of Frza and Rico, their EP ‘Nothing Happening Here’ was released earlier this year in January and was mixed and mastered by James Cain of Unprofitable Records. Not only are they at work on their second EP, but they have upcoming shows at Sneaky Dee’s on April 24th with Anchor Shop and at Rancho Relaxo on May 5th as a part of the Two Way Monologues/Indiemachine Canadian Music Week Showcase.

The EP is a short but sweet three song release. The title track has instrumentals reminiscent of classic rock from years ago paired with vocals that could be a bit louder but are nonetheless pleasing to listen to. “Disappear You” starts off much faster than the previous song and keeps up the pace, making you nod your head along. The closing song, “Jukin” is a slower song that again shows roots from influences in heavier rock.

Overall the EP, although short, is great for those who enjoy rock of any variety and I highly enjoyed it. Even if you’re not sure if you would like the EP or not, head over to their Bandcamp where you can pick it up for free.

Rating: 4.5/5 - Canadian Beats

Duos are the new quartet. Who the hell needs a bassist anyway, am I right?

Toronto's The Spare Me's are among the latest duos hitting the scene. The pair have just released a 3-song EP, Nothing Happening Here, named after the sludgy first track. - Snob's Music

Bio

The Spare Me's are a two-piece from Toronto who are in a willful hostage situation with each other.

We
formed out of ennui and desperation and are inspired by technological paranoia, latent angst, a feeling of creeping dread, and the realization that we are both the fall guy in the film noir of our lives.

We released our first 3 song "Nothing Happening Here" EP to the void of the internet.
