"Travis M: The MisUnderstood"

Travis M.’s “The MisUnderstood” is a blast from the past with a note in the present. After we get through the introduction we head into “Process.” It is a really laid back track. I thought from the intro that this one was going to be a ratchet record, instead this song came on and was well composed and straight laced. With the title track we get a fresh beat that has an old school, ’80s feel. With “BEAST” I thought we’d step up the energy a bit, and I was kind of right. The rhymes come a bit faster than we’ve gotten so far and it was a nice shake up. Travis M.’s pal Gina Smith hops on to help out on the anthem-like gem “Faith” while Serene gets in on the fun with “Gennesis.” As the record rolls on you can hear his influences that sound a bit New York in “Dream Land Gone Wrong.” He ends things with “Monsta with Xan.” This one really picks it up and comes across like a different artist. Travis M. gives us an old school feel in 2015 and it’s a reminder that some young emcees are still picking things up from the past and making them new again. "The MisUnderstood"

Grambling State University’s Travis Matthews, a senior mass communication major from Houston, dropped an extended play named TheMisUnderstood Oct. 15.
He has been rapping since the 4th grade, but didn’t seriously pursue a rap career until he was 15.
He was inspired by his friend in high school who had a funk band named “Disfunkshun” that toured locally. Travis looks up to artists such as Common, Lupe Fiasco, Nas, and Linkin Park
That makes your music different from others?
Travis: “Most of the instrumentals are melodic and the lyrics are meaningful when you compare that to the rest of today’s pop culture, where everything is more noisy. As far as lyrics go, not a lot of people in the spotlight try to send a positive message, which is what I try and do in every song all while trying to be relatable and entertaining towards my audience.”
That message or messages are you trying to send through The MisUnderstood?
Travis: “I started on this project at a time where I was feeling misunderstood because I felt like people had been given me all this praise just because I was entertaining them through my poems but not actually understanding that a lot of these words are coming from pain. The worst part of it to me came when all these girls started calling me perfect because I know I’m not and a lot of my art comes from my mistakes and fears so I wanted people to understand why I do what I do and that I am not perfect. I also had stories inspired by people I know that I wanted to tell as well in effort to be a voice for others who feel misunderstood.”
The project features GSU students Nobel Michael, Mionne Featherstone, Ginia Smith, Katrina Harris, Terry Bowman, Douglass Thurman, and Corey Howard. - The Gramblinite

"Travis M Delivers The Struggle with ‘Meanwhile’"

Houston, Texas – July 10, 2017 – Life after college for many is a time of self-exploration. It’s the first time in their life they are facing an adult reality that’s made of where they want to be and where they have to be. Houston-based emcee Travis M explores that on his upcoming release, Meanwhile. He takes listeners on a journey through the duality of his reality like no other.
Writing songs since the fourth grade, Travis M. has always had a fascination for music and come high school knew it was time to try and make something out of his then hobby. He started getting on stages around Houston, but when it came time to head off to college he had to put things on a sort of pause for awhile, but he soon learned that he had to hit play. Going from Houston to a small town in Louisiana for school allowed him to focus on not only his education, but his craft as an artist; a poet. Travis M. built up his cred with his peers at his university and neighboring ones as well. Finally graduation came in May 2016 and with that, the real world filled with 9-5 jobs.
Meanwhile dives deep into what it means for an artist to struggle between working a life to make rent, and working towards a creative career all at the same time. Heard in singles like “Mine” and “Reality Check,” listeners can get the full picture when Meanwhile drops July 21, 2017.
