Southside Minneapolis rapper and producer Tufawon (1/3 of the Iluminous 3) celebrates the release of his latest project The Send-Off, an album dedicated to expanding horizons and increasing cultural awareness. Growing up in poverty without the privilege to travel outside his immediate community, the importance of worldly influence and global understanding wasn’t instilled early on, but an eye-opening series of trips to Cuba with the US Cuba Artist Exchange of the Twin Cities enlightened his perspective and broadened his creativity. Working with Cuban rappers, producers, and instrumentalists brought a new inspiration to the Minneapolis veteran’s art and hustle, and he’s been itching to continue to explore the world and grow even further.

The Send-Off is about freedom, centered around the limitless possibilities of the vast human experience. The show’s proceeds will go towards funding future creative endeavors through travel. On this album, Tufawon is putting his best feet forward with the mindset that this is only the beginning. - The Lifestyle Observer

"THE 10 BEST TWIN CITIES RAP ALBUMS OF 2013"

Tufawon - Schwag

Mavin MC of Illuminous 3 took on the identity of Tufawon, a grimy scrapper dedicated to living the high life on a shoestring budget, for his latest EP, and it sums up the Minneapolis rap lifestyle perfectly. Atop self-produced beats that elucidate the grit of our hero, Tufawon details his days piecing together enough dollars to smoke low-grade weed and sleep with single mothers, but the message is ultimately one of making do and staying positive in otherwise tough times. Listeners will definitely be able to identify with the daily scrape and impoverished good times, and the physical album even comes wrapped in a plastic baggie with a Tufawon-branded lighter and weed jar. Full of hard bass and heady hooks, Schwag is a great example of the innovations Illuminous 3 have been putting forward since the beginning. - City Pages

"Friday Night – Tufawon “SCHWAG” CD Release Party"

Mavin MC has been a bit busy… check out his latest album under alias Tufawon & then head over to The Nomad this Friday for the CD Release Party!!!

Tufawon “SCHWAG” CD Release Party

Tufawon is a rap alias created by Mavin MC of Illuminous 3. He’s a raunchy yet funny sort of character who raps and produces his own material.

His new EP, entitled Schwag, is set to release February 19th. The album
illustrates some fairly vulgar yet sarcastic lyricism over original sample-free beats.
At first, you may get the idea that it is an album about smoking poor quality weed,
but as you give it a closer listen you will understand it’s ultimate message:
“Schwag is a symbol for creating your own happiness with whatever you have”.

In his single Not Quite Broke he speaks about creating a sustainable living
situation by using the bartering system, selling his car to his mother and riding

his bike everywhere to save money. In the title track Schwag, he sings and
raps with a fairly somber undertone, but balances it with tracks like Phlegm Boogie,
where he tells a raunchy yet adventurous story over production with a more
upbeat and fun kind of swing.
Tufawon’s CD release party is Friday February 22nd at the Nomad World Pub
with featured performances by Absynthe(Lizzo & Sophia Eris of THE CHALICE),
Up Rock, VANDAAM(Adriana Rimpel of Malamanya, Andres Guzman, Feng Meng Vue),
and Yakub & Dylan LP (of Audio Perm).
DJ sets by Toki Wright and Frank Castle. Hosted by Franz Diego.

2-4-1 Craft Beer & Taps from 9-11pm

Bio

Tufawon, the rapper/producer from south Minneapolis has been busy coming off of an American/Canadan tour and is currently half way through a 15 city European tour which includes music performances and activism fighting against fossil fuel projects. He will be home for the summer to write and record another album.

With his latest project The Homecoming, Southside Minneapolis rapper and producer Tufawon returns to his local roots with a new global perspective, having realized the dream of exploring the world highlighted on his previous effort, The Send-Off. With smooth and soulful boom-bap production from Sevadar Sehaj, Tufawon expands on the themes of politics, culture, social awareness, and self-care that has defined his approach, showcasing the growth that travel and personal development have brought to his life and his work.

Growing up in poverty without the privilege to move outside his immediate community, an eye-opening series of trips throughout Latin America in recent years gave Tufawon a profound understanding of the beauty and struggle that permeates all things, and his raps showcase both his genesis and his journey. In his travels, he worked with a wide range of rappers, producers, and instrumentalists across several countries, which helped push the Minneapolis veteran's music into bold new territory, and The Homecoming is the sonic culmination of his explorations.

With a slick, gritty sound that stems from his origins in the seminal Minneapolis group Illuminous 3 with Freez and Franz Diego, Tufawon holds strong to his established style while letting the vibe progress naturally with every new experience. Where The Send-Off reflected a desire to see what the world could teach him, The Homecoming is Tufawon recounting those lessons and working towards an expanded consciousness. His raps feel hyper-local and universal, drawing on a quest for a deeper grasp on himself and the broader landscape. Having absorbed so much, he now aims to give back and share that knowledge with his fans.

As Tufawon gained in popularity playing shows in and out of town, he made the challenging decision to put his music career on hold to fight the Dakota Access Pipeline. With a genuine connection to a team of water protectors, he found a home at the Oceti Sakowin resistance camp, north of the Standing Rock reservation. For 4 months, he fought alongside his new family of warriors and comrades both on the front lines and doing bank divestment actions. He is now dedicated to sharing his front line narrative through performance and public speaking.
