It was an evening of top-notch entertainment and star-studded
performances at the 10th Anniversary Gala for President Swinton at the
Koger Center on April 7. The headline stars were the legendary Lou
Rawls and jazz master Kenny Garrett.
A number of Benedict faculty and staff and a host of community
members, dignitaries, family members and friends enjoyed an evening of
entertainment and tributes in honor of President Swinton.
Rawls, seen here with his wife, Nina, ended the gala with a couple of
songs from some of his greatest hits. Benedict alumni turned recording

Swinton, performed earlier in the evening and received a standing ovation.
Benedict Music Professor Dr. Ronald High also performed gave a stirring
piano tribute to thunderous applause.
Rawls, a multi-Grammy award winning jazz performer and spokesperson
for the United Negro College Fund’s nationally televised fundraiser “An
Evening of Stars,” serenaded the gathering in his smooth, velvety baritone.

They had a unique sound and style that made people of all ages move in their seats. When asked who they were people replied, Unisoghn “Unified Sons Of God Harmonizing Naturally”. Once Unisoghn began performing on and off campus, they opened the doorway for other students to start showcasing their talent. Unisoghn now consist of “Baby Boy” Michael Brown, “Chill Will” Willie Green, “Mystro” Steven Vandross and “T-Bone” Terrence Gambrell. Unisoghn has performed and won many talent shows in the Greater Columbia Area, including a local Apollo Show that took them to New York to perform at the Apollo in Harlem. The four members of UNISOGHN are South Carolina natives and graduates of Benedict College. They have been singing individually since they were youngsters in church and continued vocalizing throughout their high school years. During their tenure at Benedict College the men combined their individual sounds to be called by nothing other than UNISOGHN. The group Unisoghn has been deemed the Godsons of R&B/Soul by the late great Mr. Bill Pickney of the Drifters. UNISOGHN has open and sung background for varies artist such as: The Gap Band, Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, Jeffery Osborne, Barbara Lewis, Jerry "The Iceman" Butler, Hank Ballard, etc. If asked what makes UNISOGHN sound so different from others, it would be the passion behind our music. We are not just singers, but songwriters and most of all Entertainers. We want people of all ages, race and nationality to feel our music. We like to make you think back to the first time you fell in love, as well as your break-up. We like to make you want to dance. If we had to give a name to our music, it would be called "Southern Soulz". Why? We want to touch your Soul in only a way Unisoghn can.
