"Yohannes - HANNE (EP)"

Checking out Lyfe Harris’ new and smooth body of work, No Nights Off, one couldn’t help but notice one contributor standout a little more than others. His name is Yohanne and he hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Across Lyfe’s EP, the rap-crooner made his presence felt on icy tracks “Sometimes” and “Baggage,” making this listener want to find out a little more about the artist. What I found was a project he put out last year titled Somber and a more recently released, semi self-titled EP called HANNE.

Starting off strong with “I Need That,” Yohanne’s 4-track project pulls listeners in to his dark and druggy, Trap inspired world no doubt influenced by his time in West Michigan, Atlanta and the Richmond, Virginia area (RVA). On the production tip, RVA mainstay Ron Oilers creates 75% of the tape with the other 25% coming from OG Maco’s in-house producer OG Parker.

The production alone makes HANNE highly favorable but the real highlight is Yohanne’s ability to create catchy hooks. His voice, a cross between a melodic J. Cole and Tory Lanez, is easy on the ears and his actual rap flow is cool but doesn’t hold a candle to the artist’s silky croons which makes the intro and Yohanne’s ode to Young Thug and Johnny Cinco, aptly titled “JohnPopiNThugger,” a clear standout for me.

Give the project a spin below. His new project Yellow Janea will be here September 1st. Add HANNE to the collection in the meanwhile at http://hyperurl.co/HANNE-DL. - Ashleyoutrageous.com

"RESPECT MAGAZINE’S UNSIGNED SPOTLIGHT – SERIES 9"

Yohannes blends R&B & Hip-Hop in his own way for his distinct sound. The Grand Rapids artist provides us with compelling tunes and is good at providing us with catchy lyrics. He’s not afraid to play with a wide variety of sounds and adds an exciting factor to his music.

– What’s the biggest goal you hope to accomplish in 2015?
The big goal I wanted to meet this year was to get 100,000 SoundCloud plays. We just did that. So now it’s on to a million and more. We want to continue to give great music to people.

– What message do you hope your music gives to the listeners?
I want my listeners to know one thing when they hear my music, and that’s that their point of view is a good one.

– How would you describe your own sound?
My sound is really just my how I feel music should sound. My rendition of the world. What I’m doing shouldn’t be labeled yet. Just know we’re going to push the envelope. Let’s keep listening.

– What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned since making music?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned this year would be to believe in your team and yourself. Everything will work for everyone if you continue to create and share. - respect-mag.com

"Yohannes Vents On ‘Maury'; ‘Yellow Janea’ Project Coming Sep. 1st"

Meet Grand Rapids, MI native Yohannes who was put forward to me by a mutual friend. Even before being out forward to me I was familiar with the name but to now build a relationship up with him and deliver some music is a great feeling.

On Sep. 1st Yohannes will drop off his Yellow Janea project, something I am eagerly awaiting. Before that however we get a quick fire record which see’s the MI native vent a little, urging rappers to do more when it comes to creating and to also become better people. It’s quite the motivational record. Yohannes grabs Ron Oilers production and gets to venting. Hear it below and check back for more as the projects release edges closer. - boi-1da.net

"YOHANNES"

I’ve been listening to Yohannes &… Yohannes! I’ve had “JohnPopiNThugger” on repeat for a few days now which is currently his most popular track on Soundcloud—& with reason, it’s infectious. You won’t be able to help singing along with the chorus—an apparent homage to Johnny Cinco & Young Thug, who are likely two of his musical influences. Production from OG Parker is nothing less than magnificent & it just feels good, the entire vibe is right. This one’s a classic in my book, but it doesn’t stop there. Stream Somber & the Hanne EP below & his latest release “Maury”. - senclaire.com

Bio

Gabriel Yohannes Smith II. Was born and raised in  Grand Rapids, Michigan where he spent the bulk of his youth and early teen years. Possessing what some would call a rebellious yet youthful spirit, still searching for understanding of this thing called life. He was one day presented with a life altering opportunity. An opportunity that would allow him to break away from everything he had ever known. A fearful spirit of hope mixed with an overwhelming case of wanderlust caused a young Yohannes to hop up one day during a visit from his father and decide that he wanted to go with him.

Not knowing what to expect or anything about what he would soon consider "home" Yohannes found himself in Richmond, VA. 14 years of age and half way into his freshman year of HS. Possessing nothing but a single pair of yellow timberland boots. He had unknowingly closed one and opened a new chapter of his life. The struggles and different circumstances he would face, plus the new people he met in the years to come would ultimately mold him into the talent he is today.

Today at 21 years of age and counting, Yohannes is ready to showcase his talents to the world. Having seen and experienced a wide array of positivity and negativity in his young life, he is ready to tell his story. While still making you laugh, smile and dance occasionally.
