Biography

My music style has hints of my favorite artists and composers and is considered one of a kind. It is emotionally charged piano instrumental that is like the month of March. The music can come in like a lion and go out like a lamb. I try to take you the listener to as many places as possible. I am an American composer and pianist that will be releasing my 2nd album in 3years. It continues to be my goal to compose a recognizable film score for a major motion picture. Most notably I sit at the piano with pencil and paper and play from the heart. It doesn't matter if it's Guns N' Roses or a Chopin Waltz I will try to move you! Thanks for lending me your ears and would love to tell you a story with my music selections.

There are so many talented musicians out there and all inspirations to me when they play passionately. My music is not an absolute and it's meaning is up to you. I will use my discretion on how I play and what I play based on my audience. There is something good found in all types of music.

My grandfather whom I never met has influenced my playing. He would play at the movie theaters when the movies were silent. I think my playing brings back memories in my family of his playing and has inspired me to write music that will one day be in film God willing.

I finished my first album entitled "Anatomy Of A Piano Player" in late 2010'. The album is solo piano with 11 original tracks. My frist music video came out 6months ago and can be seen on my youtube channel. Currently, I am working on my new Christmas album for 2012 and I'm slated to hit the studio Feb. 18th at the prestigious Skyline Studios in Manhattan. It is a rush to know you are recording on a piano in which one of your favorite artists has done work on. (Billy Joel) Not to worry if there isn't a piano at your venue because I can accomodate you with my keyboard which has various settings to tap into the music mood I'm portraying.   Like so many talented musicians hailed from long island such as Billy Joel, Joan Jett, Cyndi Lauper and Johnny Maestro, J.K. Hodge is an extraordinarily gifted piano player and song writer.
  
  J.K. Hodge has recently released his latest CD "Keep In Touch." This CD was recorded live on location by Al and Leah of GIG Productions. The CD is a compilation of 8 songs in a romantic instrumental style. The recordings are somewhat linked together unquestionably revealing a story layer by layer. What is the significance of this story? What is J.K. conveying in this artistic work? Does it address romance, uncertainty, a sense of optimism and hope? It's a mystery in which the interpretation is left up to the individual's imagination. "Keep In Touch" is a fabulous CD to kick back and relax to on a chilly Bayport evening. Whether sitting by the fire, cooking, reading or just spending quality time with family and freinds, his music is a back drop to tranquility. By Maria Saperstein

Hodge is a special kind of musician in that he stores his musical repertoire in his head and passes his knowledge of music to his private students, even encouraging them to compose their own pieces.
  
  In addition, Hodge recently recorded a half-hour television segment on keeping "real music alive" for Staten Island's public access station. He also participated in a benefit concert for Haiti in which he teamed up with the Islip Methodist Church and raised $1,500 for donation to Haiti.
  Hodge hopes to eventually play at larger venues, but has performed at numerous local libraries, businesses and restaurants. Composing and performing his music is an opportunity Hodge noted he is extremely grateful for. Dated March 4, 2010.

  Isaac: How easy is it to gets gigs for you as an artist? What is the live music scene like in your area?
  
  J.K. Hodge: Like anything in life you have to work to get gigs but if you have a good reputation you will be asked back. I don't think gigs have become limited but I do feel in this recession that businesses aren't willing to pay as much as they have in the past. I'm piano instrumental so the music scene is a little different for me because I play in smaller quieter venues. I still think the music scene is thriving around here but its more cover bands because there aren't many schools that are attended by out of state residents. You lose that cool college band scene because of this in my opinion.

Setlist

With my keyboard in hand I will play just about anywhere at anytime or any place. I enjoy playing some of my pieces outside because they have been influenced by nature. I will also play in very intimate settings where the music I write can be captured to the fullest. I can cover Joel to John and Bach to Beethoven and I will bring my own element to whatever I sit and play. I also enjoy playing some of Guns N' Roses awesome ballads!!
